People become interested in martial arts training for a variety of reasons. Some are looking for a new healthy activity to pursue, others want to learn to defend themselves if physically threatened, some are seeking community, and still others are looking for a way to build up their confidence in situations where they might otherwise feel intimidated or afraid. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers all of the above, and it is perfect for people from young children to older adults.
One of the most unique things about BJJ is that it is a non-striking sport, using grappling techniques instead. We teach people of all ages how to leverage their body weight so they can overcome even much larger opponents, building strength, confidence, and agility in our students. This is especially helpful in serving those who wish to undertake self-defense training. The ability to successfully fend off a larger adversary is a skill that can help children overcome being bullied, help survivors of attack walk more confidently in the world, and help people in security professions, such as police officers, do their jobs at the highest levels.
BJJ is a unique option amongst the slew of self-defense classes out there, perhaps most of all because we are a true community. We support each other in learning the sport, and also in becoming the healthiest, happiest, and most balanced people we can be as we walk in the world.
